What should we believers learn from the 2020 Presidential election?
"our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases" (Psalm 115:3)
I trust you did in this election what your rightly informed conscious provoked you to do. But know this, whether or not you voted, and who you voted for was irrelevant! Yes, you heard me right, irrelevant...at least so far as the results of the election are concerned.
Hear me out. "Evangelicals" zealously preached that Christians "had" to "get out the vote," that it was our "responsibility" (some even said it was sin if we didn't), and that if we did the President would be re-elected and, at least for 4 more years, "all will be well." Well, anyone with any sanity left knows that the vote did "get out," that there were clearly enough legal votes cast to re-elect the President. Yet, it appears that the President will not have a second term! What happened?
"The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His sovereignty rules over all" (Psalm 103:19).
“...the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and bestows it on whomever He wishes....All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, but He does according to His will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth; and no one can ward off His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’" (Daniel 4:25b, 35)
Accept it. God is not influenced by His creatures' "votes." He does what pleases Him at all times according to His purpose to glorify Himself in all things regardless of even the "best" devices of truly well-intentioned men. He places on the various "thrones" of the nations (and removes from those same thrones) whoever He sees fit according to His eternal purpose regardless of what men may think.
As believers we must understand that what is going on in the USA in these perilous times, including this election, is not about America's future. God is not concerned about America. God is concerned with His people, His true church. What is going on in our country is the Lord exposing the true hearts of we believers who live in the USA. In love He is using every means to remind us that our citizenship is in heaven, and to wean us off of our dependence on and trust in the temporal things of this corrupt world. To that end He is provoking us to examine ourselves, to set our affections on things above, and to not place our hope in a "Constitution" or a "Democracy," but in the imminent return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His frustration of evangelicals' political ambitions is just another step towards that holy end.
If somehow things change tomorrow so that the election results are reversed as some hope they will be, the fact will remain that for true believers there is no hope in America. We have no hope in any government, or any other device of man. We have only one hope: Jesus Christ (1 Tim. 1:1) and His soon return to catch us away from this earth into His loving arms to dwell with Him in heavenly bliss forever.
Is this truly your hope? If it is, then you can rest peaceably regardless of what transpires,
"'for He Himself has said, 'I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,' so that we confidently say, 'THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?'” (Hebrews 13:5-6)
